Two-term Republican incumbent Will Weatherford faces a challenge from Democrat Elena McCullough. This is a David-vs-Goliath race with Weatherford in the role of Goliath. Weatherford is well funded, well-coached and on the path to becoming speaker in 2010. He is also a poster child for the status quo. If you love Senate Bill 6, stealing from trust funds, wrestling the right to choose fro women, Taj Mahal courthouses, fat cat retirement benefits for state representatives and watching Florida's economy rot, the you'll love Will Weatherford. His party and his buddies have owned Florida government lock, stock and barrel for over a decade. They control the governor's office, the cabinet, the House and the Senate. Today's Florida was crafted by the Will Weatherfords. You can't have change voting for the same old leadership. Ms McCullough is a fresh voice. She's an immigrant who has lived the American dream. She's proudly served her country in the U. S. Coast Guard. She believes we deserve better and wants to hold the line on taxes while modernizing our revenue collection system. She wants to bring more accountability to the system. She's a moderate who owes no loyalty to any special interest. La Gaceta strongly supports Elena McCullough.

The campaign is making positive strides! Yesterday, Chris Ingram of the Irreverent View Log wrote "...McCullough who is a Coast Guard Veteran and local community activist is a rising star who Florida Democrats should cultivate. Weatherford represents everything that is wrong with Tallahassee: sense of entitlement, lack of transparency, out-of-touch with reality, too cozy with lobbyists and special interests. Voters looking to send a message to Tallahassee that they have had enough should reject Will Weatherford. Irreverent View recommends Elena McCullough for State House District 61."
Last night at a candidate's forum hosted by the Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce. Elena said that stimulating job growth in District 61 is the campaign's major issue. Additionally, she said politicians in Tallahassee should have been proactive vice reactive when jobs were being lost.
